If you are a fan of the Wizard of Oz, chances are that you know what a Cairn Terrier is. This breed gained fame from being portrayed in Wizard of Oz as Toto and is still a lovable, popular family pet to this day. Originating in Scotland, the Cairn Terrier was originally a rodent and fox hunter who was used on farms to keep these pesky intruders at bay. Today, the Cairn Terrier is often seen as a family companion for the most part. This dog is active and extremely alert.

The coat of the Cairn Terrier can be any color tone except for the color white. This dog stands about 10 inches high at the shoulder and weighs about 14 pounds.

The Cairn Terrier is impish by nature and likes to tease his owner now and again. The best way to ensure that this dog knows his place in the home is enrolling him in a good dog training course. With that said, this dog is completely loyal and quite lovable. The best way to keep the Cairn Terrier in line within the home is to give him plenty of outdoor fun and exercise. A Cairn Terrier who is worn out from a day of play is one who will be calm and less impish indoors.

Due to his small size, this dog does fine in an apartment setting. As for grooming, it is wise to brush your Cairn Terrier a few times a week and give him occasional baths. The Cairn Terrier has a longhaired coat and t brushing will ensure that your pet’s fur is free of tangles and stays healthy.

If you want a small dog who is intelligent, fun and loving, the Cairn Terrier is a good pick.
